Business Owner Chases Thief, Runover By Getaway Car

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)-A business owner was hurt after chasing after a thief and was run over by the getaway car. Surveillance cameras at Wendy City Wireless in Aurora captured images of the suspect.

It happened at about 11:22 a.m. Tuesday at the store's Aurora location at 15057 E. Colfax Ave.

The owner said once the suspect got his hands on the most expensive phone in the store, he took off.

That's when Wendy City's owner, Richard Stephenson, went after the thief. As he was trying to chase him down, a woman behind the wheel of the getaway car ran over him.

"I almost caught him, but his girl was driving the car and she caught me first," said Richard.

"I can't believe that people have no regard for human life, all for a cell phone. My husband could have died," said Richard's wife, Wendy.

Stephenson suffered two broken ribs, along with injuries to his arm, legs and back. He's posted signs on his business letting patrons know they can't come in wearing hoodies, sunglasses or hats.

Police in Aurora are searching for the man and woman.
