Burglar Targets Pot Dispensaries In Aspen

ASPEN, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Aspen are looking for the suspect who broke into two medical marijuana dispensaries. The latest burglary was early Monday morning.

Investigators hope solid evidence will lead to their suspect. Just after midnight Aspen Leaf co-owner Bill Miller's security cameras caught the burglary suspect on video from a couple of angles.

The suspect was scurrying around the front lobby of the medical marijuana dispensary looking behind the counter and then heading down the hall.

"He went through the cabinets, went through the drawers in the desk, ran back around and out of our store," Miller said.

"We're looking for a male about 5-foot-8, weighs about 140 pounds, fairly thin," Blair Werey with Aspen police said.

The suspect kicked through a chicken-wire window to get in. Based on how quickly he moved in and out, Miller and the Aspen police think he may have previously been in the shop. They are now checking through days of video, checking to see if the suspect shows back up.

"We remove our records, we remove our medicine from the store," Miller said. "There's nothing to get."

A second dispensary down the street from Miller's store wasn't so prepared. The owner declined to comment.

"At the other dispensary, Ute City Medicinals, there was a significant amount of medicine that had been taken," Werey said.

Aspen police are calling Miller's surveillance video a great tool for solving the case. They are already following up on several tips from the community. Miller says an arrest can't come soon enough.

"It's a sad thing that somebody has to be that creative to be that much of a low-life," Miller said.

Aspen police say the break-ins are the first problems they've had at any marijuana dispensaries.
