Bennet Answers Questions About Debt Deal
DENVER (CBS4)- Sen. Michael Bennet spoke to voters in Denver on Wednesday. He responded to questions about the debt deal struck this week by congress and signed by the president.
Bennet came prepared for the standing-room only crowd with handouts showing how much federal dollars actually come to Colorado. With the new spending caps, it's uncertain what will happen when it comes to transportation and education funding.
Bennet told the standing room only crowd that spending cuts alone won't help the economy, that we also need tax reform.
He voted in favor of the debt deal, he said, simply to avoid a default and downgrade in the U.S. credit rating.
"It says something pretty sad about where we are right now when keeping the lights on is a success," said Bennet.
Bennet admits there is still a lot of uncertainty about the deal. A bipartisan committee has yet to identify $1.5 trillion in cuts.
Bennet said the way congress handled the debate isn't helping the economy.
