Bear Creek Swells From Rain, Evergreen Residents Pile Sandbags

EVERGREEN, Colo. (CBS4) - Evergreen residents worked Tuesday night to protect homes and businesses from flood waters. What is normally a busy bike path was covered by a swelling Bear Creek.

With more rain in the forecast, neighbors said these conditions may be just the beginning.

"Hope for the best, prepare for the worst," resident Mark Footer put it.

Tuesday's relentless rain hammered Evergreen. Even deer were looking for higher ground.

"If it comes up another foot, that's when we start to have problems," said Footer.

He and his neighbors prepared sandbags as the water rose higher in the Upper Bear Creek neighborhood, bringing back some painful memories.

"Last year, it went from this, to water streaming right where we're standing," he said.

The downpour sent water streaming down hillsides, flooding roads, and threatening bridges. It was enough to convince 9-year-old Cole Mcfarland to help his neighbors fill sandbags.

"Helping out is better than thinking of yourself," he said.

As the driving rain continued with potentially dangerous consequences, Footer said there's still no place he'd rather be.

"I wouldn't trade it for anything, this is the lifestyle that we love," he said.

The rain slowed momentarily Tuesday night, but power was out for a large portion of Evergreen.
