Aurora Police Search For Suspect Who Assaulted A Child

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- Police in Aurora are searching for a man who sexually assaulted a child early Thursday morning. Officers don't have much of a description, but have a warning for parents and caregivers of children.

Shortly before 6 a.m., officers were called to a burglary and sex assault involving a child at a home in the northwest part of Aurora.

The family is Hispanic and only speaks Spanish. The family told officers that they heard noises coming from their 4-year-old daughter's room. They went to investigate and found a stranger in her room standing over her.

The suspect ran out of the home and left the scene before officers arrived. He is described as a white or Hispanic man, 15-19 years old, between 5'5" and 5'9" tall. Detectives hope to get additional details about the suspect as they continue to investigate.

"Based upon information gathered at the scene, we believe that this individual attempted to have unlawful sexual contact with this 4-year-old girl and may have even succeeded in doing so," said Aurora Police Det. Bob Friel.

The child was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Detectives from the Crimes Against Children unit are investigating the case.

"Because of the distressing nature of the incident, we wanted to get this information out to the community before we have all of our answers," said Friel.

The suspect entered the home through an open window.

"Obviously it is summertime and people enjoy sleeping with their windows open, but particularly for the northwest part of the city, we're asking residents to take extra precautions until we have this individual in custody," said Friel. "Before going to bed at night take a walk around your home and make sure all the windows and doors are closed and locked."

Detectives have pulled a list of registered sex offenders in the area and they are working to contact those individuals who match the description of the suspect.
