Aurora Police Search For Gunman Who Shot Officer

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4)- An Aurora police officer was hurt in a shooting Thursday night. It happened in the area of the 1500 block of N. Emporia Street at about 8:30 p.m.

"He called out on the radio that he had been shot and had returned fire. The suspect fled from the area," said Aurora Police Detective Bob Friel.

The officer was shot several times. He is expected to recover.

"The officer was transported by the fire department to a local hospital and will survive from his injuries. He was shot several times. I'm still trying to determine exactly where he was shot and how many times he was shot," said Friel.

Several building in the area have been cleared, but they continue to search for the gunman. A perimeter has been set up surrounding where officers believe the gunman may be hiding.

"We're hoping he's still in the perimeter. But the reality is he could have slipped through," said Friel.

Police in Denver have sent a helicopter to assist in the search for a suspect involved in the shooting.

Friel said exactly what the officer was doing before he was shot is unclear. Police are trying to determine whether the officer was on foot patrol, conducting a traffic stop or investigating a suspicious incident.

People living in the area did receive a reverse 911 call alerting them that an officer had been shot and a search for the gunman was under way. They were advised to stay indoors and away from their windows. Another reverse 911 call is scheduled once the search operation is complete.
