Adams County Communities Protest Jail Cap

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) - Adams County communities are protesting a decision by Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr to impose a cap on prisoners beginning next year.

The cap calls for cities to get a limited number of beds at the county jail and pay a $55 fee for each prisoner if the cap is exceeded. The cities will see their jail beds cut from 130 to 30.

According to the Denver Post, the sheriff wants to stop city residents from being sent to the jail for petty offenses and cover a budget gap.

The cities say the cap is unnecessary. They say the county could send municipal prisoners to less-crowded jails in rural areas and cut spending.
