9th Grade Academies Help Ease In New High Schoolers

DENVER (CBS4) - The school year has already begun for thousands of Denver students attending special 9th grade academies.

The academies were created to ease the transition to high school. Denver Public Schools has been hosting the academies for five years. The district says students who attend the academies actually do better in school than students who don't attend.

Senior Lara al-Karim attended the academy when she was a freshman and was back this year to help out.

"It definitely takes away the deer in the headlights effect freshman have when they first walk in," al Karim said. "You have the confidence you need when you first walk in, you know the teachers, upper classmen; you really have that confidence and you know it's not that scary."

DPS also now has 6th grade academies to help students transition to middle school.
