2 Women Escape Castle Rock House Fire
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) - Investigators are looking to see what caused an overnight fire in Castle Rock.
Two women inside the home were able to escape the home located in the 4000 block of Bennington Avenue when flames broke out about 4 a.m. on Monday.
The home suffered extensive damage. Neighbors reported hearing three explosions before the fire started. Powerful cellphone video captured the intense moments as the home went up in flames.
"I guess it's just instinct to record tragic situations like that," neighbor Dennis Desormeaux said.
"It burned the garage door away, lapped up to the front of the house and that's how it got up into the attic," Chief Art Morales with Castle Rock Fire Rescue said.
Fire officials say the two women inside heard noises coming from the garage. They then they saw smoke seeping into the hallways.
"They exited the house right away," Morales said. "As soon as they saw the smoke they went out; they did the right thing."
Some neighbors say loud explosions shook them awake, thankfully alerting them so they could evacuate as well.
"My daughter was having a sleepover and she came into my room panicking that she heard gunshots." neighbor Jenni Hynek said.
The loud explosions that neighbors heard could give fire investigators a better idea of how the fire started. Investigators have been taking a closer look at the garage.
"When they're burning, the tires will blow out and that will make a pretty big bang," Morales said.
The Founders Village home is likely a total loss, but those living nearby say they're grateful nobody was hurt.
"I think when something like this happens everybody comes together real quick," Desormeaux said. "It's just about making sure everybody's okay."
