According to Metra, the pedestrian was struck by the train near Oak Park at the Berwyn stop just before 10:30 a.m.
The victim, identified as Austin Stanek, 24, of Island Lake, Illinois, was taken to Advocate Good Shepard Hospital in Barrington, where he died.
Victor Rivas-Martinez Jr., 22, of Waukegan, was arrested and charged with failure to remain on the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, not having a valid driver's license and no proof of insurance.
A pedestrian entered the left traffic lane for unknown reasons and was struck by a vehicle. Debris from the crash entered the middle lane and hit another vehicle, state police said.
Illinois State Police said the crash happened just before 12:30 a.m. in the local lanes southbound at 44th Street.
The driver did stop after the crash.
The Lake County Coroner's Office said around 10:30 p.m. The Waukegan Police Department arrived at the 1500 block of Grand Avenue for a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.
