"I am not fully retiring, but I am taking time away from the game again this season. I cannot deny my love for the game of hockey and still feel the passion for competing at my highest level," Toews wrote on Instagram.
The three-time Stanley Cup champion missed two months of this season with long COVID-19 and an immune system illness, after missing all of the 2020-21 season.
Toews had a chance to win the game in overtime, but he was denied by Felix Sandstrom on a breakaway with about 2:15 remaining.
