Friends, family, and coworkers made their way into Parkview Christian Church in southwest suburban Orland Park Thursday to honor the memory of llinois State Police Trooper Clay Carns. Sara Machi reports.
Police say he had turned on his lights and pulled over on the shoulder to pick up debris when he was hit by a vehicle.
Carns was struck and killed by a car on Dec. 23 while picking up debris on Interstate 55.
A pedestrian entered the left traffic lane for unknown reasons and was struck by a vehicle. Debris from the crash entered the middle lane and hit another vehicle, state police said.
"Any time we lose a trooper hurts, but today is Christmas Eve here on December 24, so it kind of hurts in a particular way," ISP Dir. Brendan Kelly said.
Trooper Clay Carns served 11 years with ISP and was a husband and a father to two young kids. Jermont Terry reports.

So far in 2024, there have been 25 Scott's Law-related crashes with 12 of those troopers hurt.
Around 12:45 a.m., a state police trooper's squad car was parked in the right lane of I-55 southbound at Route 83 with its emergency lights activated.
