Mayor Lori Lightfoot has tapped the interim leader of Chicago's police watchdog agency for the permanent job, despite a letter from 20 aldermen who say they are "vehemently opposed" to the appointment over a recent disciplinary report that recommended fallen Officer Ella French be suspended.
The City Council Finance Committee on Monday signed off on $3 million in settlements to resolve a handful of lawsuits accusing Chicago Police officers of misconduct, including a case involving a high-speed police that led to a woman's death in 2018.

By a 27-5 vote, the Budget Committee advanced the mayor's 2022 budget recommendation, setting up a final vote by the City Council on Wednesday.
The Finance Committee voted 19-12 to approve the property tax increase, which includes a $22.9 million automatic tax hike tied to the consumer price index, which aldermen authorized last year as part of the 2021 budget plan; another $25 million to help fund the mayor's $3.7 billion capital infrastructure plan; and $28.6 billion in tax revenue that will be collected from new property.
"Because this continuing course of conduct has no home in our Party, we will not stand silent in the face of such bigotry," the Cook County Democratic Party said of Ald. James Gardiner's behavior.
"We are strongly opposed to this mandate and are urging you to reconsider your executive order," the aldermen said.
