The carjacker, a 29-year-old man, approached a 31-year-old man in his vehicle about 10:45 p.m. in the 200 block of West Walton, police said.
The woman ran away in fear and the suspect drove off in her vehicle, police said. No injuries were reported, and the suspect did not appear to have a weapon.
That arrest came the same day Police Supt. Eddie Johnson announced the formation of a new task force to combat the rise in carjackings in the Chicago area.
The woman was driving her gray 2011 Lexus north just after 2 p.m. on Sheridan Road near Davis Street when it was rear-ended by a black Acura, according to a statement from Evanston police.
The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Bucktown.
Police said the two suspects stole a lime green 2014 Ford Mustang from two men in their 20s around 9:15 p.m. Thursday near 115th and Church streets.
Just after 10 p.m., three people went up to the woman's white Volkswagen in the 500 block of North Austin and took it at gunpoint, according to Chicago Police.
Officers later saw the vehicle speeding, but didn't chase it, instead finding it crashed into a building at 3000 N. Laramie, police said.
The carjacking came on the heels of a series of purse snatchings in the Chinatown area.
The crime and chase spanned the western suburbs and ended in a collision in Forest Park, police say.
