Zbikowski: Samardzija 'Would Have Been Awesome' In NFL
(CBS) Jeff Samardzija shocked the NFL landscape when he chose to sign with the Cubs, rather than enter the 2007 NFL Draft.
Samardzija, 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, was a two-time All-American wide receiver at Notre Dame, recording over 1,000 receiving yards in each of his last two seasons.
Friend and former teammate Tom Zbikowski, now a safety for the Bears, discussed how Samardzija's NFL career may have played out.
"He would have been awesome," Zbikowski told the Tribune. "You saw him play. I don't think he would have been like Randy Moss because he didn't have that type of leaping ability and that speed. But Jeff's like a cross between Plaxico Burress and Keyshawn Johnson – with a mix of Ed McCaffrey just because he's white.
"You know how good Keyshawn was but he'd have like one or two touchdowns in a season? Jeff would have had more touchdowns than Keyshawn."
Regardless of what could have been, the Cubs' ace is comfortable with his decision.
"I've been pretty content with what's going on with my career and where I'm at,'' Samardzija said. "I think we've got a good thing going here with the Cubs.''
