Your Chicago: Naperville's Centennial Beach

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (CBS) – Naperville's Centennial Beach is one-stop shopping when it comes to summer fun.

Built on a former quarry back in 1931 to commemorate the city's 100-year anniversary, it is a place where families come from near and far to enjoy summer fun.

There is more than enough to do at the sprawling facility. Sameera Luthman would know. She's been the marketing director at the Naperville Park District for 11 years

"You've got the water that starts at zero depth, which is great for parents with little kids. It goes all the way up to 15 feet. You've got the diving boards for the daredevils, you've got the sand beach for the little kids," she says. "There's just  something for everyone."

On this day, Centennial Beach was staffed with 25 lifeguards. The off-duty ones had the good sense to be inside the bathhouse, cooling off out of the 100 degree heat.

Both the young and young at heart have a their own reasons for wanting to be here.

"The place is awesome," Doug Sculthurpe says. "It's convenient. It's five minutes from my house. It's nice here, a lot of people having fun."

Centennial Beach is open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. during the peak of the summer. Admission is $6 for residents, $10 for non-residents.
