Your Chicago: Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot
(CBS) – In less than two weeks, families will gather around tables all over this country to feast upon Thanksgiving dinners.
On that same day, in west suburban Elmhurst, nearly 10,000 people will run and walk to raise awareness about hunger and raise money to help fight it.
CBS 2's Rob Johnson reports.
Last Thanksgiving, more than 8,000 runners and walkers trotted along the streets of Elmhurst in the name of hunger awareness, at the 29th Annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot.
Dan Gibbons started the event 30 years ago. That first year, 74 runners helped raise $520, but the family-friendly event kept growing and sponsors signed up. Over the years, it has brought in roughly $2.7 million to feed the hungry.
Gibbons says hunger is a problem everywhere, including DuPage County.
"There are a lot of people who are just one paycheck away from needing help. We help the food banks that take care of the people," he says. "Fifty-nine thousand people are at risk for going to bed hungry, and 20,000 are kids, and for us, that's just not acceptable."
