Mets Reach 3-Year, $75M Deal With Cespedes
(CBS) Outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has agreed to a three-year, $75-million deal with the New York Mets, according to multiple reports Friday night.
The Chicago White Sox were among the teams interested in Cespedes, the last big-name free agent, though the South Siders reportedly were reluctant to offer a long-term contract.
The 30-year-old Cespedes had a big 2015 season, hitting .291 with 35 homers, 105 RBIs and an .870 OPS in time split between the Tigers and Mets, whom he helped lead to the World Series.
He's capable of playing left field or center field.
Cespedes' deal includes an opt-out clause after one season and is pending a physical, ESPN.com reported. The opt-out will allow Cespedes to hit the open market in a weaker free-agent class next offseason, if he so chooses.
