Yahoo's Dan Wetzel Talks About The Tressel Investigation
Yahoo! Sports' Dan Wetzel was among the reporters who broke the story that Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel knew about player violations before they came to light.
Tressel was recently suspended for two game by the university for not bringing the violations to their attention. On Wednesday, Wetzel joined the Boers and Bernstein Show to talk about how he, and his colleagues, began their investigation.
"Basically [it started] when we watched the December 23rd press conference when they announced the suspensions of Terrelle Pryor and the others and the first part of the tattoo parlor came to light," Wetzel said. "And what struck us was the incredible effort that Ohio State and the Big Ten put in to get these guys' punishment delayed so they could play in the Sugar Bowl, which alone was curious and very controversial. But also the fact that they had found that five guys had sold stuff at this tattoo parlor, gotten cheap tattoos or whatever they were. And they conducted what they called a 'ten-day investigation' and then declared that they had found everything and that it was over.

"Maybe that's possible and they did, but I think what we looked at it was, how can you run a ten-day investigation on an 85-man team...and find major violations, per the NCAA, on these sales and just say 'OK, found enough.' It seemed like it was rushed, it seemed like they were just trying to get these guys eligible for the Sugar Bowl. So that was kind of a start where we said 'there has to be more to this, there absolutely has to be more to this.'"
