Wrong-Way Driver Killed After Plowing Into Semi On I-80/94

GARY, Ind. (CBS) -- A Hobart, Ind., man was killed early Friday morning when he drove the wrong way on the Borman Expressway – right into the path of a semi.

As WBBM Newsradio's Mike Krauser reports, Indiana State Police say Timothy Lieb, 35, might have been drunk when he got on the Borman (I-80/94) and headed west in the eastbound lanes near the junction with Interstate 65.

The Hobart man was in one of the center lanes as two semi-trailer trucks approached. The first swerved out of the way, but the second semi driver said he had no time to react. The black Honda Ridgeline pickup truck that Lieb was driving was on him.

The impact killed Lieb instantly around 1:30 a.m.

The semi was owned by Crete Carrier Corporation of Lincoln, Neb., and was loaded with about 41,000 pounds of food product that was going to Pennsylvania. The semi sustained severe front tractor damage, but its driver was not injured.

Debris from the wreck was scattered over 250 feet in both the eastbound and westbound lanes.

Police say they will have to wait for toxicology test results to be sure of whether Lieb had alcohol in his system.

The road was closed for about three hours, and a number of cars ended up with flat tires heading through the debris.
