Would-Be Pyrotehcnician Injured In Illegal Fireworks Explosion
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (CBS) -- A young man with hopes of getting a license to legally explode fireworks may have blown his chance this week.
As WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports, Arlington Heights police say the 22-year-old man was severely burned when fireworks he was trying to build in his family's basement ignited around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, causing a flash fire.
The Daily Herald reports emergency responders found in the man's home a blank application for a pyrotechnician's license.
Police tell the newspaper the man had been experimenting with building mortar-type fireworks, and one of the powders ignited.
Police tell the Daily Herald that having the chemicals to make those fireworks is not illegal, but combining them is.
The man was taken by his father to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, and was later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, the daily Herald reported.
No charges had been issued as of Thursday morning.
