Worker Trapped, Hurt At Good Samaritan Hospital
UPDATED 01/20/11 12:23 p.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A maintenance worker at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove wound up as a patient at the hospital after a serious accident.
Downers Grove Fire Department crews were called to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, 3815 Highland Ave., about 10:17 p.m. for the entrapment, spokeswoman Marsha Giesler said.
Investigators say two maintenance workers were on duty in a mechanical room in the hospital when two air conditioning coils -- each weighing more than 800 pounds -- fell on them and pinned them against a wall, Giesler said.
One worker was able to free himself enough to crawl out and called 911, Giesler said. Once summoned, emergency crews worked for about an hour and 10 minutes to free the other worker.
The hospital's trauma team responded along with fire department crews, and tended to the pinned worker's medical needs while crews worked to free him, Giesler said. He was immediately rushed to the hospital's emergency room, she said.
A hospital release late Thursday morning said the trapped worker's condition has been upgraded to fair and the other worker has been released.
