Nanny Fends Off Attack In Bucktown Garage
(CBS) – A woman fended off an attacker in the Bucktown neighborhood -- a struggle that was caught on surveillance video.
CBS 2's Jim Williams reports the brazen, daylight robbery attempt occurred in the 1700 block of Wolcott.
One of the camera angles shows a gray car driving past an open garage. The car stops suddenly, and a man apparently carrying a weapon gets out and creeps toward the garage. His intended target: A woman who had just parked in the garage.
She doesn't make it easy, even though the victim later says the assailant had a kitchen knife.
Steve Jensen is president of the Bucktown Community Organization.
"It appears she struggled and hollered and screamed, yelled and the guy fled without taking anything," he says.
The victim is a nanny for the family who lives at the resident.
"It's pretty frightening. When you see the video and see how fast this guy came into the garage and how little time she had to react, it's shocking," Bucktown resident Gene Pierson says.
The fashionable Bucktown neighborhood has many elegant homes and lots of security cameras, too.
Still, Jensen says, "Every couple of weeks there's an event just like this, whether it's someone on the street being accosted or somebody in their yard or garage. It's not uncommon and we're pretty much getting tired of it."
