Woman Waiting At Bus Stop Shot In Both Legs

CHICAGO (CBS) - Police are looking for a gunman who opened fire on a woman waiting for a bus in the Woodlawn neighborhood, not far from some parts of the University of Chicago campus.
The 44-year-old woman was standing at a bus stop in the 6100 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue when she was shot multiple times at 8:23 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.
The shooter was standing across the street from her, and was described as being a black male with braids who was wearing a black sweatshirt and black pants, according to Grand Crossing District police Lt. Dale Kingsley. It was unclear whether she was the target, because witnesses on the scene gave conflicting statements.
The woman was in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital with gunshot wounds to both legs, the lieutenant said.
Shell casings of an unidentified caliber were recovered on the scene at 6101 S. Cottage Grove Ave., according to the lieutenant, who said no one else was hurt.
The Grove Parc low-income housing complex is located on the stretch of Cottage Grove Avenue where the shooting happened. Much of the complex has been undergoing demolition in the past year for a new mixed-income development.
The block where the shooting happened is also only a couple of blocks from the South Campus and Burton-Judson dormitories on the University of Chicago campus, but it is not an area frequented by students.
An arrest has not been made early Wednesday, the lieutenant said.
