Illinois State Police say a 23-year-old Buffalo Grove woman caused an accident that put a man in a hospital because she was texting, or doing something else with her cell phone, while driving.

The accident happened just after 7:30 p.m. Monday on northbound Illinois Route 53 just south of Kirchoff Road in Rolling Meadows, state police said.

The 39-year-old accident victim was changing a tire on the left median, when Kelly Luch, 23, zoomed by, state police said.

As she scrolled through her cell phone, Luch lost control of her vehicle and hit a semi-trailer truck in the center lane, state police said. She then struck the rear of the vehicle on shoulder, pinning the man between who had been changing his tire the median and the vehicle.

The man was taken in serious condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, state police said.

Luch received three traffic citations –improper lane usage, driving on the shoulder, and texting while driving, state police said.
