Woman, teen charged in deadly shooting outside West Pullman restaurant
UPDATE (6/26/2023) - Cook County prosecutors dropped all charges against both Carlishia Hood and her son.
CHICAGO (CBS) – A woman and her teenage son are facing murder charges in the fatal shooting of a 32-year-old man in the West Pullman neighborhood.
Carlishia Hood, 35, and the 14-year-old boy appeared in bond court on Thursday.
They were identified by surveillance footage as the suspects who shot and killed the victim, who police identified as Jeremy Brown, during an altercation on Sunday in the vestibule of the Maxwell Street Express, located in the 11600 block of South Halsted Street around 11 p.m.
Prosecutors say Hood was in line getting food while her son waited inside their car. Shortly after, Brown entered the restaurant.
Both were in line when an argument ensued. Hood started texting and pointing to her son while a witness was laughing and encouraging Brown.
The son arrived at the doorway as the argument turned into a fight with Brown punching Hood in the head three times, according to prosecutors. That's when the teen pulled out a firearm and shot the victim in the back.
Brown fled the restaurant, but the teen followed him outside and fired more shots as Hood instructed him to continue shooting and to kill him, prosecutors said.
He was shot twice in the back and later died from his injuries.
After the teen finished shooting, prosecutors say Hood turned her attention to the witness and instructed her son to shoot her. She attempted to grab the gun from her son, but he pushed her off. Both then fled the scene and drove back home.
On Thursday, the two turned themselves in and were placed into custody.
Both were charged with first-degree murder. Hood, who was a valid FOID card and concealed carry license holder at the time of the incident, was also charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Neither had a previous criminal record.
Hood's bond was set at $3 million and is scheduled back in court on July 12. Her son was ordered held without bail and is due back in court on July 25.
