Chicago shooting: Mother dies after being shot in face on West Side
CHICAGO (CBS) – A woman was killed after being shot on the city's West Side Tuesday night.
The shooting happened in the 5500 block of West Lemoyne Avenue in the Austin neighborhood around 9:50 p.m.
Chicago police say the victim, identified as 55-year-old Tracey Allen Showers by the Medical Examiner's Office, was exiting her vehicle when shots were fired in the area. Showers' husband, Pernell Showers, told CBS 2 she had just picked up their daughter from work and was parking her car when another car came by and shot her.
The victim was shot in the face and was taken to Loyola Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.
"Last night, I was at my lowest point," said Pernell Showers. "The light that shined so bright in my family dimmed."
Showers' daughter, Janea Kitchen said, "I love you mommy. I'm proud of you. I'm so proud of you."
Showers' husband said his daughter was in the car when the shots rang out. She thought her mother ducked, but when she got out of the car, she saw her mother laying on the ground. Pernell said he could hear his daughter's scream from inside their house.
No arrests have been made.
Area detectives are investigating.
CBS 2's Shardaa Gray reported that a nearby church she attended is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the woman's killer. Another church said it would put in an additional $5,000 reward, making the total reach $10,000.
The church is asking anyone with information to speak up.
