Woman Shot Near South Side Elementary School
CHICAGO (STMW) -- An elementary school in the South Side Washington Heights neighborhood was temporarily locked down Thursday afternoon after a woman was shot about a block away, officials said.
The 18-year-old woman was walking with a male friend in the 1000 block of West 97th Street about 2:50 p.m. when she heard shots and realized she had been hit, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.
Wacker Elementary School, 9746 S. Morgan St., is about a block away from the location of the shooting.
The school was temporarily placed on a "soft lockdown" as a precautionary measure, Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Keiana Barrett said.
During a soft lockdown, students are kept inside the building, Barrett said. The shooting happened around the time of dismissal and the school day was not disrupted.
The woman was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Center in good condition with a gunshot wound to her right calf, Estrada said.
Nobody was in custody for the shooting Friday morning as Area South detectives investigated.
