CHICAGO (CBS) — A 49-year-old woman was killed after a drive-by that turned into a shootout in the West Pullman neighborhood Friday night.

Chicago police say the woman was sitting on a porch in the 11800 block of South Indiana Avenue with another man around 9:30 p.m. when an unknown man in a dark-colored SUV drove by and started shooting.

The man on the porch, who had a concealed carry license, fired back, and the SUV driver left the scene.

The woman, identified as Katrina J. Brown by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, was shot in the face and arm. She was treated by Chicago fire crews and taken in critical condition to Roseland Hospital, where she later died.

Violence prevention groups were at work in the neighborhood on Saturday, trying to prevent another night of violence.

"We knock on doors and talk to people in the community," said Ieasha Monette, outreach supervisor with Roseland Ceasefire. "To help prevent the violence and the unnecessary shooting and killing in our communities. Trying to get more information about the shooting and also help prevent retaliation."

"It's always different the next day when you see people back outside," said Street Pastor Donovan Price. "Kind of tumultuous. It was a shocking scene."

The drive-by shooter left behind more than two dozen shell casings.

"It can be our families," said Price. "It could be anyone, but it's so unfortunate for someone to lose their life due to unnecessary gun violence."

Roseland Ceasefire is on the streets of Chicago at least three days a week.

"We're not giving up until we get some kind of information," said Monette.

Price says he is out nearly every night.

"I generally respond to a majority of the homicides," he said. "I'm hoping that the weekend will be a calm weekend here in Chicago. I'm hoping that people will still be able to enjoy themselves."

The man who returned fire on the porch was not hurt. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

As of Saturday, no one has been arrested.

Area Two detectives are investigating.
