Woman, Pets Rescued From Fire
LYONS, Ill. (CBS) -- A woman and two pets were rescued from a fire at a house in west suburban Lyons on Wednesday, but another pet cat died in the blaze.
Firefighters responded to the fire at 8111 Salisbury Ave. at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, officials said.
Before firefighters arrived, Lyons police officers "were able to grab a ladder from that yard" or a home next door, and used it to rescue a woman from the second floor of the house, Lyons Fire Department Chief Gordon Nord said.
Emergency crews also managed to rescue two pets from the blaze.
"We were able to get a dog and a cat out (safely)," Nord said, "but one cat did succumb, apparently from the smoke."
The woman was the only person in the home at the time.
Firefighters brought the fire under control within about 30 minutes, Nord said. The home sustained substantial fire damage to the basement and first floor, and heavy smoke damage throughout, Nord said. It was made uninhabitable by the blaze.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Wednesday afternoon.
