Woman Killed, Man Wounded In Dolton Shooting
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A young mother was shot and killed Thursday night while sitting in a car in south suburban Dolton, and a man who was in the car with her also was wounded.
The two were sitting in a car parked in a driveway Thursday night in the 15300 block of South Irving Avenue, when someone opened fire on the car.
The passenger, 19-year-old De'Arrea Haymond, of Riverdale, was killed. She leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter.
The 25-year-old man in the driver's seat survived, but remained hospitalized Friday morning.
Neighbors who heard the gunshots said the block is a relatively quiet area of Dolton, near Thornridge High School.
The two victims were friends, but Haymond's mother said she doesn't know why her daughter was out with the friend Thursday night. She found out her daughter had been killed through social media.
Dalena Ingram-Grant had a message for whoever killed her daughter.
"That was so senseless and stupid of you to take a mother from her child, and to just not care about her life. I'm just so tired of seeing our black children, and just kids period just hurting each other out here. I don't know why they so angry, and what's going on. We just need to stop it, and try to help each other," she said. "I just want to tell all the parents to make sure you keep watch out for your kids."
The motive for the shooting was unknown as of Friday morning. Police were not commenting on the investigation, but planned to hold a news conference Friday afternoon.
