Driver In Fatal West Side Hit-And-Run Turns Self In
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 67-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash in the Austin neighborhood Sunday night. Police say the driver turned himself in about three hours after the accident.
Jennie Davis was crossing North Avenue at Luna Avenue around 9:40 p.m., when she was struck by a vehicle headed west on North Avenue.
Darlene Berry was walking by at the time. She said she heard what a sickening boom before she saw Davis being tossed in the air.
"I'm going to tell you the truth, they shouldn't do that. God don't like ugly," Berry said.
Eyewitness Sheila Davis said the driver struck two parked cars before hitting Jennie Davis.
"He hit her. He stopped. She went up in the air, and when she came down, he ran her over and kept going," she said.
The driver made a U-turn and fled the scene, police said.
Police said the vehicle that struck Davis was found a short distance away, about four or five hours later, and the male driver was taken into custody. No charges had yet been filed as of 11 a.m.
Davis was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where she was pronounced dead.
"My heart is just so heavy right now," said Davis' daughter, Aisha.
The fact the driver didn't stop is what's most frustrating for her.
"Why would they just keep going like that? That's what I thought. Why would they just keep going?" she said.
"She was already sickly; bad heart. She's been in and out of the hospital, but always came home, and for her to go this way, that's just a hard pill to swallow," she added.
Charges are expected either Monday or Tuesday against the driver.
