Woman Hospitalized After Being Hit By Train In Naperville
NAPERVILLE, Ill. (STMW) - A 53-year-old Naperville woman remained hospitalized Tuesday evening with what was described as a "non-life-threatening" injury after she apparently fell in front of a moving Metra train along the Naperville-Aurora border.
The incident occurred at 4:04 p.m. at the Metra station near the southwest corner of North Aurora Road and Route 59 on Naperville's northwest side. It involved an outbound Metra train.
Two Naperville Fire Department paramedics arrived there in an ambulance at 4:08 p.m., said Mark Thurow, bureau chief of the department's emergency medical services. They found a woman "who appeared to have fallen in front of the train that was pulling into the station," Thurow said.
"She had sustained an injury but was conscious, and was transported to Edward Hospital [in Naperville]," Thurow said.
Thurow would only identify the woman by her hometown and age. He would not discuss her injury, which he characterized as being "non-life-threatening."
Naperville police have jurisdiction in the case and were continuing their investigation Tuesday evening, Cmdr. Ken Parcel said.
"We're trying to figure out what happened," Parcel said. "We don't know yet."
Police remained at the hospital and were waiting to interview the woman, who was still in the emergency room as of Tuesday evening. Parcel said the woman appeared to have been traveling alone at the time of the incident.
Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet said the woman was struck by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Train No. 1239, which was scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 4:13 p.m. The train was moving by 4:50 p.m., running about 25 minutes late.
Also, inbound Train No. 1276, scheduled to depart Aurora at 4:25 p.m. and arrive Chicago at 5:27 p.m., will not operate Tuesday. Train No. 1278, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 5:30 p.m. accommodated those passengers, according to an alert on Metra's website.
