Woman Given Court Date To Explain Her Nudity
GARY, Ind. (STMW) -- Police saw a woman walking naked in the street carrying a bottle of vodka and stopped to question her Saturday night.
After talking to her, Cpl. James Nielsen and Patrolman Andrew Cuevas arrested Nicole Shashina Smith, 31, of Merrillville.
Smith was loud and uncooperative, telling police they were in trouble, because her father is a police chaplain.
"I am going to call Rudy Clay," Smith told police referring to the mayor.
Charged with public nudity, public intoxication and disorderly conduct, a more subdued Smith appeared in Gary City Court Monday.
"I'll plead to p.i. and disorderly, but I want to explain the nudity," Smith told Judge Pro Tem Barbara Spotwood.
Spotwood told Smith she would have to wait for her trial, set for March 21.
The judge did agree to release Smith without posting bail after Smith said she needed to get to her job as a child care provider.
Smith must attend 10 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings before her next court date, the judge ruled.
The Post-Tribune could not verify there is a police chaplain named Smith.
