UPDATE: 8/12/14 5:45 p.m.
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A south suburban woman was killed and five children riding in a minivan with her were injured in a crash early Tuesday on I-57 in Matteson.
The two-vehicle crash happened at 2:18 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-57 near U.S. 30, according to Illinois State Police.
A witness told police a Chevrolet Sonic was traveling at a high rate of speed and was swerving around other vehicles when the front right side of the car struck the rear left side of a Dodge Caravan, police said.
The minivan rolled over and came to rest on the right shoulder. The driver, a 43-year-old University Park woman, was ejected and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she later died, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Five children in the minivan were taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields with minor injuries, authorities said. The driver of the Sonic was also taken to St. James with minor injuries, police said.
State police continue to investigate and had no immediate word on charges or citations as of Tuesday afternoon.
