The unidentified woman was walking in the road in the 3800 block of South Pulaski Road when a car struck her at 9:50 p.m. Friday and fled, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.
The woman, who remained unidentified Saturday afternoon, was possibly near an exit for the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) when the vehicle hit her, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m. Friday at Mount Sinai Hospital, the medical examiner's office said.
Police said the woman suffered massive head trauma and a Saturday autopsy determined she died of multiple injuries from an auto striking a pedestrian. The death was ruled an accident.
The woman was possibly homeless may have been asking motorists for money, sources said. The woman did not have any identification on her, Gaines said.
The woman may have been hit by an older model Buick or Cadillac, according to police. It was not known which direction it was going, and police on the scene said they didn't see any cameras that could have captured what occurred, Gaines said.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
