Woman Charged With Firing Shots At Officer In Schaumburg Standoff
(STMW) -- A woman who fired a gun at police before being shot by an officer Saturday night in northwest suburban Schaumburg has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer.
About 7:25 p.m., someone sent Schaumburg police a message through the Text-to-911 system that said their roommate was inside their condo unit in the 1700 block of Maple Place, holding a gun and making suicidal comments, police said in a statement.
The person who texted exited the condo once police arrived, leaving the front door open. Officers entered and found 31-year-old Tamekka Broyles and "pleaded" with her to put the gun down, but she refused, police said.
She then closed the front door and refused to leave. Members of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System were called to help but could not convince her to put the weapon down, police said.
Shortly before midnight, Broyles fired one shot out a window toward a NIPAS vehicle before leaving the condo and shooting at a NIPAS officer standing in a hallway, police said.
That officer, not affiliated with Schaumburg police, was "forced to return fire in order to stop the threat," and Broyles was shot twice, police said. She was taken to a hospital with injuries not thought to be life-threatening, police said. No one else was injured.
Broyles was charged Friday with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of aggravated assault, and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm, police said. She was expected to appear in bond court Friday afternoon in Rolling Meadows.
Per protocol, the officer involved in the shooting is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit.
