Woman Charged With DUI In I-57 Crash That Hurt 8
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A woman was charged with DUI in the rollover crash that critically injured eight people, including 8-month-old twins and four other children, Sunday night on Interstate 57 on the Far South Side, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 9:30 p.m. when a minivan hit a guardrail and rolled over in the southbound lanes of I-57 near 111th Street about 9:30 p.m., police and Fire Media Affairs said.
Four people were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, two in critical condition and two in serious condition; two were taken to University of Chicago Hospitals in critical condition, and two people were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers in Evergreen Park in serious condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.
The other children injured were 2, 4, 5 and 7 years old, police said.The driver, a 22-year-old woman, was charged with DUI and child endangerment, Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Jason LoCoco said.
All southbound lanes were closed on the expressway for about 30 minutes, police said.
State police are investigating the crash.
