Wolves Tripped Up By Toronto In 4-3 Shootout
The Chicago Wolves held three leads over the course of the game but the Toronto Marlies fought back each time and were eventually victorious in a shootout, 4-3, at the Allstate Arena Sunday night.
Forwards Ryan Garbutt (G, A), Andrew Kozek (G, A) and Darren Haydar (2A) each posted multiple points for Chicago (21-17-2-2), while defenseman Arturs Kulda also added a goal in regulation. Kozek and right wing Akim Aliu scored for the Wolves in the shootout, while goaltender Drew MacIntyre stopped one of four Marlies attempts.
"We've been flat in back-to-back games and it's disappointing," said Wolves Head Coach Don Lever. "To give up that many shots in our own building is unacceptable."
Chicago opened scoring three minutes into the second period. Kozek crashed into the Marlies zone and tried to stuff a shot between Toronto netminder Ben Scrivens and the post, which the netminder stopped, but Garbutt came streaking in to push home the rebound.
Toronto (19-15-0-7) answered 54 seconds later to knot the score, 1-1, when defenseman Matt Lashoff's long shot from above the left face-off circle flew past MacIntyre and into the back of the net.
The Wolves took a 2-1 lead, 6:55 into the second period with a goal from Kulda. Left wing Nigel Dawes carried the puck into the zone and dropped a pass to Kulda, who flipped a wrist shot past Scrivens from the circle.
The Marlies evened the score again, 2-2, at 16:43 of the middle frame. Left wing Jerry D'Amigo got control of the puck along the boards and moved in on MacIntyre, slipped it past him as a Wolves player tried to dive to block the shot.
Kozek put Chicago in front again, 3-2, 1:56 into the third period. Haydar held the puck behind the net and passed it out front to Garbutt, who slipped it across the top of the crease to Kozek for a quick rip past Scrivens.
Scrivens (4-1-3) turned aside 21 shots for the Marlies in regulation and overtime.
The Marlies tied it up, 3-3, with 4:48 remaining in the third period when left wing Jay Rosehill scooped up a rebound along the left post and roofed it past MacIntyre to force overtime.
MacIntyre (4-3-1) made 34 saves in regulation and overtime in his first loss in five games.
The Wolves will host their second annual "School Day Game" on Wednesday when the Texas Stars visit the Allstate Arena at 11 a.m.
