Wolves Beat IceHogs 1-0 In Shootout Win
ROSEMONT, Ill.-- The Chicago Wolves and Rockford IceHogs battled through 65 minutes of scoreless hockey, but the Wolves came through with the extra point in the shootout with a 1-0 win Saturday night before a crowd of 14,505 in their American Hockey League opener at the Allstate Arena.
Chicago (1-0-0-0) netminder Eddie Lack (1-0-0) posted 25 saves in regulation and overtime and rejected three of four attempts in the shootout to record his 10th career AHL whitewash.
Forwards Jordan Schroeder, Bill Sweatt and Darren Haydar dented the net in the shootout to help Chicago win its first season opener since 2007-08, which coincides with the franchise's last Calder Cup triumph.
"Both goalies were the stars of the game," said Wolves head coach Scott Arniel. "We were a little sloppy at times, but at the end of the day a win is a win."
Rockford (0-0-0-1) goaltender Carter Hutton (0-1-0) kicked out 31 shots in regulation and overtime to record a shutout for the IceHogs, but only was able to stop one of four attempts in the shootout. Center Brandon Pirri posted the IceHogs' lone shootout tally.
The Wolves and IceHogs square off in an Illinois Lottery Cup rematch at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Allstate Arena.
