Without Change, College Football Recruiting Will 'Get Worse Every Year'
CHICAGO (WSCR) Once revered for being a beacon of integrity, Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel signed on Monday, in the midst of a scandal. While the scandal is new to Tressel and Ohio State, it's not new at all to college football.
"The worst thing for me, and the saddest thing for me, in all of these recent cases with college football, is it's very clear that college football recruiting is moving towards college basketball recruiting," former head coach and current Big Ten Network analyst Gerry DiNardo said on the Mully and Hanley Show. "We never used to have the posses. We never used to have the AAU coaches. Now we have the posses. Now we the seven-on-seven summer tournaments. It's getting to look like you're a college basketball coach in recruiting, now, in college football."

As DiNardo put it, head coaches are tempted to "sell their soul" to get a commitment from a big time prospect. Because similar to the case of Cam Newton at Auburn, one elite player or difference maker can take a well built team all the way to the national championship.
"If the institutions don't get their arms around this recruiting, this football recruiting that's turning into basketball recruiting," DiNardo said. "This is just the tip of the iceberg, it's going to get worse every year."
