Winds, Waves Prompt Small Craft Advisory For Lake Michigan
CHICAGO (STMW) - Inexperienced mariners should stay off Lake Michigan in the Chicago area Saturday as strong winds and high waves are expected.
The National Weather Service has issued a small craft advisory that will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for Lake Michigan Winthrop Harbor near the Illinois-Wisconsin state line to Burns Harbor in Michigan City, Ind.
A small craft advisory means wind speeds of 22 to 33 knots and waves of at least three feet are expected to produce hazardous conditions to small crafts, according to the National Weather Service's website. Inexperienced mariners -- especially those operating smaller vessels -- should avoid navigating in these conditions.
The strongest winds will be up to 25 knots from the southwest, and the highest waves will reach five feet, the weather service said.
Temperatures are expected to be in the high-50s Saturday.
