Wind, Blowing Snow Could Be Problem For Afternoon Rush
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Tuesday morning's snowfall combined with blustery winds this afternoon could cause visibility issues for commuters during the evening rush.
As of 11:20 a.m., nearly half an inch of snow had fallen at Midway, with less at O'Hare, according to the National Weather Service. Tuesday's high temperatures in the metro area are not expected to surpass 29 degrees, with a 25 recorded as of 11 a.m.
No flights were not delayed at O'Hare on Tuesday morning and only a few flights were delayed about half an hour at Midway, according to the city's Department of Aviation.
But winds are expected to steadily increase through the afternoon and will cause blowing snow, according to the weather service.
A gale warning is in effect for Lake Michigan until 9 p.m., and winds up to 35 knots could cause waves as high as 11-14 feet.
While temperatures are expected to rise the next few days— highs of 34 Wednesday, 38 Thursday and 37 Friday—a "wintry mix" of precipitation is possible starting Thursday, according to the weather service.
Snow, rain and drizzle are all possible Thursday and Friday, before it transitions to all snow Friday night. The area could get several inches of snow this weekend.
"It's something we're definitely tracking and it may be too early to tell," NWS meteorologist Ben Deubelweiss said. "But it looks like it we could get several inches of snow this weekend."
