Will Ditka's Number Be The Last One Retired?
(CBS) When Mike Ditka's No. 89 is retired in December, the Bears will have a total of 14 numbers retired, the most in the NFL.
But will it be the last?
Bears Chairman George McCaskey indicated in a statement Friday morning that the team is now done retiring numbers.
"We have more retired numbers than any other team in the NFL," McCaskey said. "After this, we do not intend to retire any more numbers but we thought if there is going to be a last one, there is no more appropriate one than 89."
If that's the case, it appears Brian Urlacher, who retired Wednesday, will not see his No. 54 retired. It also means Dan Hampton's No. 99 and Mike Singletary's No. 50 will not be retired.
Ditka's number is the first Bears number to be retired since 1994 when Dick Butkus (51) and Gale Sayers (40) were honored.
