White Sox Trade Rios To Rangers; Call Up Avisail Garcia
(CBS) The White Sox have traded outfielder Alex Rios to the Rangers, the team announced Friday.
The White Sox sent Rios and a reported $1 million to the Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports the player expected to go to the White Sox is infielder Leury Garcia.
Garcia, 22, has appeared in 25 games with the Rangers this season, going 10-for-52 with an RBI and a stolen base.
In 47 games with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate this season playing primarily shortstop, Garcia hit .264 with four home runs, eight doubles and 19 RBIs this season.
In a corresponding roster move, the White Sox called up 22-year-old outfielder Avisail Garcia, acquired from the Red Sox in the Jake Peavy trade. He's batting .370 (10-27) with one home run, nine RBIs and six runs scored in eight games for Triple-A Charlotte.
The Rangers claimed the veteran outfielder off waivers Thursday afternoon, giving the two teams 24 hours to work out an agreement. Rios is owed $13 million in 2014 with a $13.5 million team option for 2015.
Rios, 32, is batting .277 with 22 doubles, 12 home runs, 26 stolen bases and 57 runs scored in 109 games this season. He hit .269 (615-2,285) with 74 home runs, 287 RBIs and 99 stolen bases in 599 games with the White Sox after being claimed off waivers from Toronto in 2009.
