White Sox Lose Konerko, Crain To Disabled List
(CBS) White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko and relief pitcher Jesse Crain were placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday afternoon.
Crain has a right shoulder strain and his DL stint is retroactive to June 30. Konerko has been battling a lower back strain and returned to the lineup Tuesday after missing six straight games.
To fill their spots on the roster, the White Sox recalled third baseman Brent Morel and purchased the contract of left-hander David Purcey from Triple-A Charlotte.
Crain is in the midst of a very good season and was expected to be dangled as trade bait. He has 0.74 ERA (best in the American League) and 46 strikeouts in 38 games with the White Sox this year. Konerko has been struggling with just a .249 batting average, seven home runs and 30 RBI in 67 games.
Purcey is 0-2 with a 3.03 ERA, three saves and 43 strikeouts in 26 relief appearances with Charlotte this year while Morel is batting .283 with 20 doubles, five home runs and 40 RBI in 68 games with the Knights.
