White Sox 'Feel Good' About Closer Situation
(WSCR) One of the problems the Chicago White Sox have had this season has been the back-end of their bullpen, Matt Thornton blew saves at the beginning of the season, and Sergio Santos had some trouble this past week.
But it doesn't seem as if those blown saves have the White Sox coaching staff very concerned.
"If we play a little better defense early in the year, Matt Thornton gets a couple saves and it's a different story," White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said on the Danny Mac Show.
Trying to put things in perspective, Cooper says that blown saves are inevitable, no matter the closer.

"Mariano Rivera will blow five, six or seven games, you know what I mean," Cooper said. "And he's the best in the business. So it happens, and it will happen. We've got three guys out there, at least three guys, that we feel good about in a closer situation. If a couple of them have pitched a lot and we choose to go with somebody else, we feel comfortable with it.
"We entered the season, really, without having a closer, you know a quote, un-quote guys that's done it before on a consistent basis. So, Sergio [Santos] is in his second full year, and he's learning the ropes, you know, still learning the ropes period, never mind about the closing job too. You know, again, we feel good about a few guys, you know, depending on the situation."
