White-Cheeked Gibbon Born At Lincoln Park Zoo
(CBS) – Lincoln Park Zoo has a new resident: a baby white-cheeked gibbon born earlier this month.
The as-yet unnamed gibbon is the fourth offspring for father Caruso and his mate, Burma. The baby joins an older brother, Sai, who turns three in January.
The latest addition to the Helen C. Brach Primate House was born Aug. 16.
"Burma is holding the baby close and showing every sign of being a great mom," Curator of Primates Maureen Leahy said in a news release. "The youngster is bright, alert, and clinging well."
White-cheeked gibbons, with their extremely long arms, are a species of small ape native to Southeast Asia. They are endangered from habitat loss and poaching.
Burma, her baby, and the whole gibbon family can be seen at the Primate House daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
