West Pullman Food Pantry's Truck Stolen
CHICAGO (STMW) - Ten days after it was purchased, to better provide food to homebound seniors and others in need, a West Pullman community food pantry's truck was stolen.
Pastor Virgil Jones, of the Mother Jones Food Pantry at 711 W. 120th St., said he discovered the white 16-foot box truck was gone from the food pantry's lot about 11:30 p.m. Friday. He had used his personal car to deliver food to a home Friday night, "and when I got back, it was gone."
At the time it was stolen there was no food in the truck, but that truck would be used to pick up food which would then be distributed to those in need.
The Mother Jones Food Pantry has been providing food to those in need for the past four years and through that time they have done so without a truck. The needs of those in the community have increased and "we needed a truck to help feed the people," Jones said.
The food pantry purchased the truck on June 6, he said. "We had it for ten days," Jones said. "It took us four years to get this truck, and one day for some heartless person to steal it."
Mother Jones Food Pantry feeds an average of 2,000 people a month, Pastor Jones said. They distribute food from the pantry every Saturday at noon and today they're expecting more than 150 families, he said.
