Three Pedestrians Hit By Speeding Car In West Loop; Driver Also Injured
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Three pedestrians who were walking to the Blackhawks game on Friday were injured when they were hit by a speeding car in the West Loop.
The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. at the southeast corner of Randolph and Halsted streets, a busy section with several trendy restaurants and bars. Fire Department officials said a driver hit three pedestrians at high speed.
Two men who witnessed the crash were getting a pre-game meal at Haymarket Pub & Brewery before attending the Chicago Blackhawks game. One said he heard a loud noise and saw one of the victims underneath the car. A second victim appeared to have a broken leg.
"The third one was almost under the car on his back and you could see blood coming out of his head," said Kevin Snider.
Snider said the victims were also in the bar and decided to walk to the United Center.
"They were just in the bar speaking with the manager," Snider said. "they were joking about taking the shuttle over to the game they said they wanted to walk."
Police said a black Hyundai Santa Fe heading south on Halsted was trying to make the green light when the driver lost control of the SUV, and hit three male pedestrians crossing the street. The Santa Fe then hit a parked car facing north on Halsted, and came to a stop on the sidewalk outside the Haymarket Pub.
Two victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, one other was taken to Stroger Hospital. One pedestrian was in critical condition, another was in serious condition. The male driver who hit them also was taken to Stroger Hospital.
Another driver whose vehicle was clipped in the crash refused medical treatment, according to the Fire Department. Police said Halsted was closed between Washington and Randolph after than crash, and
